CUA's Benjamin T. Rome School of Music celebrates 50th anniversary with Gala Concert

CUA president John Garvey noted that the university has a long history of offering the community musical productions, concerts and operas.

"We have taught (music) since Herbert Hoover was president, but we've been the preeminent school of music for 50 years," Garvey said at the beginning of the concert.

Music courses have been offered at the university since 1927. Originally taught off campus, music classes moved to the campus in Northeast Washington in 1950. The school of music was established in 1965, and named the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music in 1984.

G. Grayson Wagstaff, dean of the music school, said the concert, while marking the school's 50th anniversary, "is as much about the future as it is the past."

In remembering "the many brilliant teachers who are no longer with us who helped us get here tonight," Wagstaff said that "wherever and however this world goes, we need great music like this tonight."
