| DETAILS: | The Partnership for Catholic Sacred Architecture - a collaborative effort between the schools of architecture at The Catholic University of America and the University of Notre Dame - presents the two-day symposium, "A Living Presence: Extending and Transforming the Tradition of Catholic Sacred Architecture." A keynote address on the importance and role of sacred architecture in the life of the Church will be delivered by Cardinal Justin Francis Rigali, archbishop of Philadelphia, on Friday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m. This symposium will explore the design of Catholic churches as it relates to the church's tradition and how it is expressed in modern times. Saturday afternoon will feature a panel discussion with architectural historian Denis McNamara, assistant director of the Liturgical Institute at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Ill.; Duncan Stroik, professor at the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture; and Craig Hartman, design partner of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in San Francisco. Stroik, whose style is traditional, and Hartman, whose style is modern, will discuss church design from their personal perspectives. Friday and Saturday's lunch presentations will feature Anthony Visco, director and founder of Atelier for the Sacred Arts in Philadelphia, and Leo Nestor, Justine Bayard Ward Professor of Music and director of CUA's Institute of Sacred Music. At Saturday evening's reception, the winners of a national design competition for church design will be announced. Both students and professional architects were encouraged to apply to the competition, which was also sponsored by the partnership. The symposium is open to the public.
