WHEN: Friday, June 4; Saturday, June 5; and Sunday, June 6
WHERE: Theological College The Catholic University of America 401 Michigan Ave., N.E. Washington, D.C.
DETAILS:

Theological College, the national seminary of Catholic University, will present three workshops on music in the liturgy for musicians in parishes, religious houses and educational organizations.

The hands-on sessions will feature examples of chant composed for English and strategies for implementing the new and revised Mass texts. The workshops will provide access to little-known but invaluable resources that all liturgical musicians should know about and practical tools for evaluating and crafting sacred music.

Sessions will be led by Peter Latona, director of music at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.; Lawrence Harris, chant specialist and director of the Canadian Symposium on Music in Liturgy in Ottawa; and Gerald F. Muller, director of music at Theological College. The sessions are:

  • Friday, June 4, 7-10 p.m.: Bringing the words of the liturgy to life through the flow and rhythm of chant in English, with examples including the responsorial psalms and new official verses for the entrance and communion antiphons.
  • Saturday June 5, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Exploring musical possibilities of the new texts of the Roman Missal, especially the Gloria, Creed and Memorial Acclamations, and placing emphasis on organ accompaniment of various styles of liturgical chant.
  • Sunday June 6, 2-5 p.m.: Presenting new English chant based on the Gregorian principles of language and lyrical melody. A variety of examples will be sung and analyzed, including English chant developed by St. Meinrad Archabbey and chant experts Theodore Marier and Rev. Anthony Ruff.

The cost is $40 for each workshop or $100 for three. Meals are available in the college dining room before and after each session for $15 each.
