The Fall and Winter 2010-2011 catalog of The Catholic University of America Press features a book on ways that Christian faith is communicated and another on a bestselling World War II novel by an author who died at Auschwitz in 1942.The press's latest catalog features "a nice mix" of the publishing house's traditional offerings on philosophy, theology, patristics, and Church history as well as the first critical monograph on Irene Némirovsky's popular war narrative Suite française and other literary studies, says Beth Benevides, marketing manager for CUA Press.In his monograph, Nathan Bracher, professor of French at Texas A&M University, explores Némirovsky's novel, which was discovered and published posthumously in 2004, more than 60 years after it was written. A Jewish Russian immigrant who had achieved literary fame during the 20 years she lived in France, Némirovsky wrote the book during the first years of the German occupation, before she was deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz.The current catalog also includes "Communicating Faith," edited by John Sullivan, professor of Christian education at Liverpool Hope University, United Kingdom, and "Church, State, and Society: An Introduction to Catholic Social Doctrine" by J. Brian Benestad, professor of theology at the University of Scranton. Benestad's book is the latest addition to CUA Press's Catholic Moral Thought Series.A recent CUA Press offering, Augustine in His Own Words , has garnered significant critical acclaim, Benevides notes. Released today, the 539-page volume offers a comprehensive portrait of Saint Augustine, one of the most influential thinkers to shape Western civilization.Edited by William Harmless, S.J., professor of historical theology and patristic studies at Creighton University, the book is an introduction to St. Augustine, intended for first-time readers. It brings together "state-of-the-art scholarship, lucid translations, and a judicious selection of readings," including excerpts from newly discovered letters and sermons, says Benevides.
