Catholic University President John Garvey has issued the following statement about Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl, CUA alumnus and chancellor, in the wake of the announcement that he will be elevated to the College of Cardinals on Nov. 20:
"It is with great joy that I and the other members of The Catholic University of America community have received the news that Pope Benedict XVI will elevate Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl to the College of Cardinals. Archbishop Wuerl has many ties to Catholic University and we have benefited greatly from his wisdom and his leadership. Since 2006 he has served as the university's chancellor, acting as CUA's liaison to the Holy See. An alumnus of the university, he was a Basselin fellow and obtained his B.A. and M.A. degrees in philosophy in 1962 and 1963, respectively. In 2006 he was named the university's first William Cardinal Baum University Professor of Theology. In addition, he has served several terms on the university's Board of Trustees. In all that he does, Archbishop Wuerl has shown himself to be a highly articulate teacher of the word of Jesus Christ. For that reason, as the national university of the Catholic Church, we are blessed and proud to count him as our alumnus, chancellor, professor, board member and now cardinal-designate. I am also pleased to congratulate Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, a former member of CUA's Board of Trustees and Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, who will also be elevated to the College of Cardinals."
