CUA Wins Three Catholic Press Awards

The Catholic Press Association (CPA) has honored Catholic University with three awards.

The University's 125th anniversary website received a third-place award for best online content not published in print for a series of articles by Senior Writer/Editor Patricia Coll Freeman that celebrated service. The articles highlighted the Cardinal Service Commitment, an effort by the University community to complete 125,000 hours of service in the year leading up the 125th anniversary. The University far surpassed its goal, completing a total of 352,627 hours of service.

CUA Magazine received a third-place award for best essay, "Love, Sweat, and Radical Stubbornness" by alumnus Kevin Ryan (B.A. 1989), which appeared in the fall 2011 issue and addressed the topic of service. In honor of the University's Cardinal Service Commitment, Ryan, who is president and CEO of the Covenant House charity and one of the nation's leading child advocates, shared his personal perspective on how volunteers can change lives.

The magazine also received an honorable mention for best coverage of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. The award recognizes the summer 2011 cover story, "10 Years After 9/11, Faith and Hope Endure," written by Catherine Lee, director of communications; designed by Donna Hobson, art director; and featuring photographs by Ed Pfueller, University photographer. The article offers a look back at how 9/11 touched the Catholic University community and how it continues to affect many alumni to this day.

CUA Magazine is mailed to more than 65,000 Catholic University alumni and friends, and since 2006, has won more than 20 CPA awards. The awards were announced on June 22 at the conclusion of the 2012 Catholic Media Conference in Indianapolis. CPA represents more than 600 member organizations in the United States and Canada.
