Franny Murray, one of CUA's most beloved people, turned 90 on Saturday, July 7. A member of CUA's Athletics Hall of Fame, Murray has been a member of the University community since the 1940s when he was a student.
After serving as a B-25 gunner in the South Pacific during World War II, Murray enrolled at CUA in 1946 and has never left.
Murray graduated in 1950 and soon after became the equipment manager, a job he still holds today. Unofficially, he has also worked as an assistant boxing coach, acting athletic director, and trainer. He has managed intramurals, facilities, and sports information operations.
Murray was inducted into the Hall of Fame on April 23,1988, following a boxing career for the Cardinals.
He has never missed a home basketball game at CUA. On Jan. 31, 2009, the court inside the Raymond A. DuFour Athletic Center was named in his honor.
"From all of us in the CUA Athletics Department, we'd like to wish Franny Murray a very happy 90th birthday," said Director of Athletics Mike Allen. "Franny has been a fixture on our campus for nearly 70 years; he's a terrific person who genuinely cares about everyone here and helps to make Catholic University the special place that it is."
