Music School Presents Fall Preview

The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at Catholic University presents the following events this fall semester. Unless otherwise noted, admission is free and events take place on the Catholic University campus: 620 Michigan Ave., N.E., Washington D.C.

Mutual Inspirations Festival 2012 - Miloš Forman On Sunday, Sept. 30, 6:30 p.m., as part of a celebration of the shared inspirations between the Czech and American cultures, Professor Murry Sidlin will conduct the CUA Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir presenting Rimsky-Korsakov's one-act opera Mozart and Salieri and Mozart's Requiem at the National Gallery of Art's West Building, West Garden Court, 6th Street and Constitution Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.

Finian's Rainbow This year's fall musical theatre show, Finian's Rainbow , takes place Friday, Oct. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. at Hartke Theater, CUA campus. Music by Burton Lane, lyrics by E.Y. Harburg, and book by E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors, students, and CUA alumni, faculty, and staff, and can be purchased online at http://music.cua.edu with an additional $2 service charge.

CUA Symphony Orchestra The orchestra performs on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. at Sligo Adventist Church, 7700 Carroll Ave., Takoma Park, Md. Conducted by David Searle, assistant professor and director of orchestral activities. Selections include Nielsen: Helios Overture; Vaughn Williams: Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis; Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique.

Carnegie Hall Concert Series For the third year in a row, performers from the music school present a series of concerts at Carnegie Hall's Weill Hall in New York, sponsored by the La Gesse Foundation. Concerts will take place Monday, Nov. 5, through Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. each day. Performers will include Jose Ramos Santana, piano; and Fabiana Bravo, soprano, on Nov. 5; 2012 La Gesse Foundation fellows on Nov. 6, and members of the CUA Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Searle, associate professor and director of orchestral activities, on Nov. 7.

The Merry Widow The fall opera will be performed Thursday, Nov. 15, Friday, Nov. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. in Ward Recital Hall. Music by Franz Lehár. Sung in English with English surtitles. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for CUA alumni, and $10 for seniors, students, faculty, and staff, and can be purchased online at http://music.cua.edu .

Composition Program Recital Student compositions from the music school's Composition Program will be performed on Monday, Nov. 26, 7:30 p.m., at Ward Recital Hall.

CUA Women's Chorus The CUA Women's Chorus will perform on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m., at St. Vincent de Paul Chapel. Kevin O'Brien, conductor.

Annual Christmas Concert for Charity On Friday, Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m., at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Ave., N.E., Washington, D.C. The concert will feature the CUA Symphony Orchestra, David Searle conductor and associate professor; the CUA University Singers, Leo Nestor, conductor and professor and director of the Institute of Sacred Music; and the CUA University Chorus, N. Thomas Pedersen, conductor and head of the musical theatre program. A free-will offering will be taken up to benefit a local charity to be named later this fall.

Honor Band Festival On Saturday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m., at Hartke Theatre, CUA Campus.

CUA Town and Gown Community Chorus The CUA Town and Gown Community Chorus will perform on Friday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m., at St. Vincent de Paul Chapel. Kevin O'Brien, conductor.

Great Noise Ensemble The Great Noise Ensemble, artists-in-residence at the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music, will present a concert on Friday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m., at Ward Recital Hall.
