DETAILS

To coincide with the recent 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, the Department of Art presents this exhibit on the works of Corita Kent (1918-1986), a Catholic artist and religious sister for 32 years whose work in pop art reflected a religious sensibility in the midst of the changing cultural and religious climate of the 1950s and 1960s.

Art history senior Emma Marty curates the exhibit with a personal touch: Kent is a relative who has inspired Marty since childhood and Marty's family has preserved many artifacts from the artist's life.

"This multimedia exhibit illustrates the evolution of her style over three decades, and charts the artist's original, transformative approaches to religious imagery, pop art, and social activism," Marty said. Marty is assisted by liturgical designer and artist Willy Malarcher (M.F.A. 1957), curator of the ongoing exhibit Celebrating Vatican II - A Spirited Response in Art and Design on display in the Salve Regina Hall Gallery through Oct. 31.
