Catholic University President John Garvey congratulated alumnus Archbishop Luis Tagle of Manila, Philippines (S.T.L. 1987, S.T.D. 1992), on his elevation to cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI.
"We are very proud of our distinguished alumnus Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle and of the trust that the Holy Father has placed in him, first by naming him Archbishop of Manila only one year ago and now announcing that he will be made a cardinal of the Church," said Garvey.
"It is especially gratifying for Catholic University because Cardinal-designate Tagle has spoken warmly of the mentoring he received from our distinguished faculty while he was studying for his licentiate and his doctorate in sacred theology in our School of Theology and Religious Studies."
Pope Benedict XVI announced Oct. 24 the elevation of six new cardinals, including Cardinal-designate Tagle. At 55, Cardinal-designate Tagle is the second youngest of the six who will be elevated to cardinal in a consistory at the Vatican on Nov. 24.
In an interview with Catholic News Service , Cardinal-designate Tagle spoke about two faculty members under whom he studied at the University: Rev. Avery Dulles, S.J., who later became a cardinal, and Rev. Joseph Komonchak, who is a professor emeritus of CUA. Cardinal-designate Tagle said he "learned many things from Father Dulles, but especially humility and to be a learner." From Father Komonchak, he said he "learned to listen to all the different approaches to the truth."
