The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation named Catholic University junior physics major Nathaniel Hlavin as a Goldwater Scholar for the 2013-2014 academic year.Hlavin will receive a scholarship to cover a portion of the cost of his senior year at CUA.
Sophomore physics major Patricia Yoritomo was awarded an honorable mention.
Hlavin plans to pursue a Ph.D. in nuclear physics specializing in research in high-energy physics at an accelerator facility.
Yoritomo will work toward a Ph.D. in physics conducting research in micromagnetism and nanotechnology.
Both Hlavin and Yoritomo said they want to teach at the university level.
Goldwater Scholars receive one- or two-year scholarships to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Scholars were selected based on academic merit from a field of 1,107 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.
This is the 23rd year that CUA has nominated students for this award. CUA is allowed up to four nominations per academic year. Hlavin is the 17th CUA student to be awarded a scholarship. Yoritomo is the fifth student to win an honorable mention.
The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency. The scholarship program honoring Sen. Barry Goldwater was designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, natural science, and engineering.
