Catholic University President John Garvey announced today that the University has hired Kevin Burke as the new associate vice president for marketing and communications, effective Sept. 4.

Burke has enjoyed a 27-year career in the higher education field, serving in a number of high-level Associated Vice President for Marketing and Communicationscommunications, marketing, and public relations roles at institutions including The Culver Educational Foundation, the University of Notre Dame, Earlham College, Ball State University, and the University of South Florida.

Most recently, Burke served as vice president for communications at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., where he directed all external communications and marketing efforts to enhance the college’s identity and competitiveness in the top tier of the country’s liberal arts colleges.

Burke earned a B.A. in English/journalism from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich., and collaborated on two books: This Historic Ground; Notre Dame Stadium, 1930-1997 (Ave Maria Press, 1997), and Notre Dame: Footfalls in Time (Harmony House, 2000).

“We are very excited to have Kevin taking the leadership role in marketing and communications,” said Christopher Lydon, vice president for enrollment management and marketing. “He has the right combination of professional experience and fit to our institutional mission to make meaningful contributions to our efforts to grow Catholic University’s national visibility.”

Burke expressed gratitude to both President Garvey and Lydon for entrusting him with his new role.

“I am very excited about joining the marketing and communications team at Catholic and, together, exploring how we can enhance further the visibility and reputation of an already renowned university,” Burke said.

“We’re all aware, of course, that the pace of change is fast and only accelerating — requiring all of us to be attuned and responsive to the latest demographic shifts, technological breakthroughs, and social media trends affecting how we connect and communicate with important audiences, especially prospective students. I know that Catholic University has great stories to tell, and I look forward to embracing these challenges and opportunities with my new professional colleagues.”

As the associate vice president for marketing and communications, Burke will serve as the chief marketing officer responsible for the University’s internal and external communications, oversee production of all Catholic University publications that are targeted at an external audience, serve as editor in chief of Catholic U magazine and the University’s annual report, direct the website, oversee all media relations, and be responsible for the advertising and marketing strategy supporting the University’s 12 academic schools and other constituents.
