CUA Symposium: "Keepers of the Past, Curators of the Future - New Directions in Managing Cultural Heritage"

CUA's Department of Anthropology will sponsor the second annual Regina Flannery Herzfeld Memorial Symposium, this year titled "Keepers of the Past, Curators of the Future - New Directions in Managing Cultural Heritage."

The symposium is held in honor of Regina Flannery Herzfeld, former chair of CUA's Department of Anthropology and a CUA alumna. Herzfeld was the first lay woman to teach at CUA, an authority on Northeastern and Plains Indians, the author of more than 20 publications and the chair of the anthropology department for more than 15 years. She was also the wife of the late Karl Herzfeld, who was the chair of CUA's physics department.

Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., university president, will welcome attendees and Anita Cook, CUA professor of anthropology, will introduce the speakers:

• Kevin Gover, director of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., who will speak about "Thoughts of Representations on the American Indian in the 21st Century"
• Stephen Loring, archaeologist in the Arctic Studies Center at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., who will speak about "The Country Is the Best Museum: The Practice and Curation of Unnu Archaeology, Artifacts and Heritage"
• Margaret MacLean, senior analyst at the Cultural Heritage Center at the U.S. Department of State, who will speak about "Choosing Wisely: Decision Making in Heritage Protection and Management"
