An expert at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., is available to discuss how the destruction caused by the tornado in Oklahoma might affect children and how children react to violent situations.
Margaret Mahon, associate professor of nursing, frequently works with children and families on how to talk about death, violence, and natural disasters. An expert on death in the lives of children, Mahon advocates talking to children about their questions and fears before presuming what they should or shouldn't know. Her clinical work has included pediatrics and adult palliative care in both hospital and community settings. Her research has involved various aspects of children's and family bereavement, family decision making related to serious illness, and different aspects of palliative care.
