| DETAILS | As part of its CUA in the City program, the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music presents a concert of sacred music by The Catholic University of America Chamber Choir and organist Joy Leilani Garbutt, conducted by Leo Nestor, Justine Bayard Ward Professor of Music and director of choral studies and the Institute of Sacred Music. The concert features works by Palestrina, Fauré, Lobo, and Howells, among others. Garbutt, a doctoral student in sacred music with concentration in organ performance, performs the first selection in each of the program's two parts. In part one, the texts are thematically linked by themes for the feasts of November, All Saints, Nov. 1, and All Souls, Nov. 2. Part one also includes Johann Eccard's "When to the temple Mary went" and Herbert Murrill's "Nunc dimmitis" - the canticle of aged Simeon in the temple, taken from the Feast of the Presentation, (formerly known as the Purification of Mary and celebrated on Nov. 17 in the old Church calendar). Part two presents music of Herbert Howells, one of 20th-century England's finest composers of sacred music, notes Nestor. Works of Murrill close part one and open part two. St. Cecilia, universal patroness of sacred music whose feast is Nov. 22, is invoked in Howell's "A Hymn for St. Cecilia" as well as in the chant "And while the instruments were playing," which precedes it.
