From: Associated Press Date: July 30, 2010 TRENTON - Some 830,000 Roman Catholics in New Jersey's Trenton diocese are getting a new shepherd.
The president of the Catholic University of America in Washington will become their bishop during an ordination Mass in New Jersey's capital city today.
Father David O'Connell will succeed Bishop John Smith, who submitted his mandatory resignation when he turned 75 on June 23.
O'Connell went to high school in nearby Princeton.
Before his 12 years as Catholic University president, O'Connell held leadership roles in New York at St. John's University and Niagara University, his alma mater.
The Trenton diocese serves parishes in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties.
