WASHINGTON (AP) -- Catholic University students can charge their cell phones at a solar-powered picnic table thanks to six of their classmates.

The students who designed the table are to be recognized Friday by University President John Garvey. The table installed recently outside the university center is equipped with outlets for charging electronic devices and was the winning design in a contest last year.

Catholic University says it also is adding 440 more solar panels to the more than 1,000 panels already installed on four campus buildings. The university says the expanded solar system will be one of the largest in the district.

The project is sponsored by Washington Gas Energy Services and Standard Solar.
