Presidents' Dogs Leave Big Paw Prints All Over Campus

John H. Garvey, president of the Catholic University of America, says students are likelier to come to his office and talk about more-serious issues after he's made an initial connection with them while walking his dog, Gus. Once they are in the office, Gus, a shaggy mixed breed, tends to feel out the situation and jump on students' laps if he deems it appropriate.

"No matter what a president is like, he can't be that stuck up if he has a dog crawling around the room and on your lap," Mr. Garvey says. "Having a dog on campus is sort of an ongoing invitation to engage in a conversation and visit."
