College sophomore Brian Tierney and his father were sitting on the stoop of their home looking at the stars when he asked his dad about his Baptism, only to find out it had never happened. It was an "interesting revelation," for the 19-year-old politics major at The Catholic University of America, but soon with support from resident ministers (students spiritual advisors in the dorms), seminarians from his Latin class and Capuchin friars, he found his way to the RCIA class on campus and began studying about the Catholic faith.
"It's been an amazing experience, sharing it with the people on campus," said Tierney. Religious sisters he met will see him on campus and ask him about his journey, said Tierney. One of his fraternity brothers is serving as his sponsor, and both his parents, his girlfriend's parents and a seminarian friend who "really took me under his wing" were present at the Easter Vigil when he received all three sacraments of initiation.
But for now Tierney is just looking forward to it all being over, so that he can see where "it will go from there," he said. "Father Eric (Delapena, a priest in CUA's campus ministry program) compared understanding God and understanding the Bible to an ocean. You can swim down as deep as you want, but in the end you'll never truly understand how deep that you can get. I'm excited to explore more of what the faith means to me."
