Calling the recent papal encyclical "Laudato Si" (Praise Be) "the Pope's legacy," Msgr. Kevin W. Irwin said Pope Francis shows "a very pastoral heart" in his writing on ecology and the environment.

Msgr. Irwin, who served as Dean of the School of Theology and Religious Studies at the Catholic University of America from 2005 to 2011 and is still a member of the faculty, called Pope Francis, who comes from Argentina the pastoral Latin American Pope.

"He's making sure that the periphery is now the center and the center has become the periphery," he said in a presentation Aug. 1 at St. Mary's Church in Richmond. The event, on a Saturday morning during the summer, drew approximately 350 people.

This encyclical, a 220-page document, should be seen as a continuation of Catholic Social Teaching, Msgr. Irwin said.
