Patricia McMullen, associate professor of nursing, wrote the triage book with a doctoral student to help nurses assess patients' issues over the telephone.
A book written by a professor and a graduate student in Catholic University's School of Nursing has been named a book of the year for 2009 by the American Journal of Nursing . Telephone Triage for Obstetrics & Gynecology , second edition, was written by Patricia McMullen, associate professor of nursing and associate provost for academic administration, and Vicki Long, a doctoral candidate.The American Journal of Nursing recognized it among the best nursing and health care publications of 2009. It won in the category of maternal and child health.Designed to be used by nurses who assess patients' issues over the telephone, the book offers advice on how to deal with a variety of patient situations. The protocols were reviewed by experts in obstetrics and gynecology. "Telephone triage is a practice trend of the information age," the American Journal of Nursing noted.Contributing to the book were: Cynthia Grandjean, assistant professor of nursing, CUA; Marjorie Graziano, clinical assistant professor, George Washington University; Felicia J. Guest, director of Training, AIDS Training & Education Center, Emory University; Elizabeth Hawkins-Walsh, clinical associate professor of nursing, CUA; Laurie Lemieux, clinical assistant professor of nursing, CUA; Barbara Moran, assistant professor of nursing, CUA; and Alice Myers, director, Donley Technology Center, School of Nursing, CUA.The book, published in March 2009 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, was featured in the January 2010 edition of the journal, along with other award winners.
