The Catholic University of America community is responding to the tragedy in Haiti with the initiative CUA Cares: A Novena of Prayer and Action for the People of Haiti.
The initiative includes the following:
-
A 12:10 p.m. Mass on Thursday, Jan. 14, in Caldwell Chapel. Celebrant and homilist will be Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., president of the university. A student with family in Haiti will offer a short reflection at the conclusion of the Mass.
-
CUA students have formed three committees and students are signing up to volunteer:
-
Education (to raise awareness)
-
Prayers (to offer prayerful support)
-
Fundraising (to raise money for Haiti)
-
A "Wall of Remembrance" is being established in the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center for CUA community members to share their thoughts, prayers and remembrances.
-
Student-created posters have been placed in all the residence halls.
-
Novena cards have been printed. Students will gather for prayers in each residence hall at 11 p.m. each day for 9 days.
-
Every member of the faculty, staff and student body is being asked to contribute at least $5 to the fundraising effort. The university will match all donations dollar for dollar.
-
Money will be collected at CUA sporting events and at the March for Life on Jan. 22. A student-staffed table to accept donations has been set up in the Pryzbyla Center. Donations may also be made online and sent to the Office of the President.
-
All money raised will be sent to Catholic Relief Services
