A keynote address on the importance and role of sacred architecture in the life of the Church will be delivered by Cardinal Justin Francis Rigali, archbishop of Philadelphia, on Friday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m. This symposium will explore the design of Catholic churches as it relates to the church's tradition and how it is expressed in modern times. Saturday afternoon will feature a panel discussion with architectural historian Denis McNamara, assistant director of the Liturgical Institute at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Ill.; Duncan Stroik, professor at the Notre Dame School of Architecture; and Craig Hartman, design partner of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in San Francisco. Friday and Saturday's lunch presentations will feature Anthony Visco, director and founder of Atelier for the Sacred Arts in Philadelphia, and Leo Nestor, Justine Bayard Ward Professor of Music and director of CUA's Institute of Sacred Music. At Saturday evening's reception, the winners of a national design competition for church design will be announced.
