Pope Benedict XVI today appointed CUA trustee, Most Rev. José H. Gomez, archbishop of San Antonio, Texas, as coadjutor archbishop with the right of succession of Los Angeles, Calif. Archbishop Gomez is 58 years old. Born in Monterrey, Mexico, and having spent his early priesthood in Texas, Archbishop Gomez will become the first Hispanic archbishop of Los Angeles. When he succeeds another CUA trustee and alumnus Cardinal Roger Mahony in 2011, Archbishop Gomez will head the largest Catholic archdiocese in the United States, with more than five million members, 70 percent of them Hispanic.
