CUA's Center for the Study of Energy and Environmental Stewardship presents the 2010 Thomas and Marie Rojas Earth Day Lecture, "Renewable Energy, Cap-and-Trade and Carbon Emissions."

The lecture will be delivered by Kevin F. Forbes, associate professor of economics and director of the Center for the Study of Energy and Environmental Stewardship. He is an active participant in Stanford University's Energy Modeling Forum in which energy experts from government, industry, universities and other research organizations meet to study important energy and environmental issues of common interest.

In recent years, a number of states have adopted policies to increase power generation from renewable sources. In his lecture, Forbes will address whether such proposed increases in renewable forms of energy are sufficient to achieve lower carbon emissions or whether other policies, such as cap-and-trade, are needed.

Cap-and-trade, also known as emissions trading, sets a limit on the amount of emissions an entity can create. If a company needs to increase its emissions allowance, it must buy credits from a company that produces less pollution. The buying company is being charged for polluting, while the selling company is rewarded for having reduced emissions.
