On their second day of orientation, approximately 1,000 new Catholic University students and their parents learned more about the students' new home away from home.
Throughout the morning, students met with their faculty advisers and the deans of their schools. In the afternoon, they learned more about the campus, student life and the Brookland neighborhood.
In a session on campus safety, Thomasine Johnson, director of Public Safety, offered parents and students tips on how to stay out of trouble.
"Use the same good common sense you use at home - it works here, too," she said.
Students were advised about campus shuttles and how to travel safely through campus and the city.
Rev. Jude DeAngelo, O.F.M. Conv., university chaplain and director of Campus Ministry, welcomed students to an afternoon session on campus ministry. He is one of three Franciscan priests on campus who minister to the spiritual needs of students.
"I am brand new," he said. "I just started here myself. I feel very much a part of the class of 2014."
Father Jude became chaplain this summer after previously working at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He and two student ministers informed the freshman students of service opportunities, liturgical ministries and faith formation opportunities. He also let students know where and when they could attend Mass any day of the week.
Campus ministry also offers social events for students, most notably alcohol-free events every Friday night.
Students and parents were also invited to tour the Brookland neighborhood by trolley, and to learn more about leadership, financial aid and career services.
