WHAT: | Class, CEOs to Discuss Business as Service to Society |
WHEN: | Thursday, Sept. 30, 3:35 to 4:50 p.m. |
WHERE: | The Catholic University of America 620 Michigan Ave., N.E. Washington, D.C. |
DETAILS: | There will be a few new students in the Business 505 class on Thursday, Sept. 30. About 10 top business executives will join the Spirit of Enterprise class to discuss the contributions of business to society. "Students tend to fall into one of two opposing extremes when considering the contributions of business and society: either they expect companies to be run like charities, without adequate understanding of the competitive pressures they face, or else they assert dogmatically, with Milton Friedman, that the only social responsibility of business is to increase its profits," says Andrew Abela, chair of the Department of Business and Economics. "We hope that the presence and active participation in this class of several successful CEOs, all of whom are committed to exemplary corporate responsibility, will help our students understand better the more complex and nuanced aspects of businesses' contribution to society." The class is part of the one-year Master of Science in Business Analysis program [hyperlink http://msba.cua.edu] - one of several new masters programs introduced by CUA this fall. The program is based on Catholic social teaching and the belief that commerce is a service to society. The executives are members of the Department of Business and Economics advisory board. They are all committed to the advancement of Catholic business education. Executives taking part are from organizations including NetApp, Netuitive, US Inspect, Infinitive, the Archdiocese for Military Service and Russ Berrie Toys. |
