The Office of University Relations announced today that Vin Lacovara has been appointed the University's first Compliance Officer.
In his new position, Lacovara will be responsible for implementing the University's Compliance and Ethics Program, including reviewing University policies and procedures for compliance with state and federal laws and regulations; coordinating compliance efforts and training throughout the University; investigating compliance lapses and overseeing implementation of corrective actions; and assisting members of the University community with compliance questions and concerns.
He will report at least twice a year to the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees on the status of compliance efforts. He also will serve as the CUA Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) contact, and as such will meet with employees and students who raise EEO matters and will investigate complaints.
Lacovara will report to the Vice President for University Relations and Chief of Staff Frank Persico and will receive operational support from the Office of General Counsel.
Before coming to CUA, Lacovara served as Compliance Investigator at The George Washington University for more than six years. There, he worked with the Assistant Vice President for Compliance and Privacy to implement an effective Compliance and Ethics Program for the University.
Previously, he was an associate attorney for Karp, Frosh, Lapidus, Wigodsky & Norwind, P.A., from 1999 through 2004, and an associate attorney for Stephen A. Shechtel, P.A., from 1997 through 1999. He received a B.A. in English and political science from Duke University in 1992 and a J.D. from CUA's Columbus School of Law in 1997. He is a member of the Maryland bar.
"CUA is very fortunate that Vin Lacovara has joined the University as our first compliance officer," said Persico. "His knowledge of CUA from his days as a law student at the Columbus School of Law and his understanding of the needs of a compliance and ethics program from his past experience make him the perfect candidate to head up this new and essential University-wide effort."
"I'm thrilled to have come home to CUA," says Lacovara. "As an institution we are subject to literally hundreds of laws and regulations. I look forwarded to helping the University community understand and meet those requirements in the context of our unique identity and mission."
