Catholic University President John Garvey issued the following statement regarding the death of Archbishop Philip M. Hannan of New Orleans, trustee emeritus of the University:
"The Catholic University of America mourns the passing of Archbishop Philip Hannan. By his example of abiding faith in Christ and love for the "least ones," Archbishop Hannan has enriched the lives of us all and continues to do so in death. Archbishop Hannan's impact is deeply felt at Catholic University, where he earned six degrees - including a bachelor's and a master's in philosophy and two canon law degrees. He later served his alma mater as member and chairman of the Board of Trustees. In that capacity, Archbishop Hannan was the driving force behind the expansion of Catholic University's physics research and the building of Hannan Hall, which now is home to the University's Vitreous State Laboratory, a leading scientific research center for the studies of materials in their vitreous - or glass - state.
Committed to Catholic University's mission, Archbishop Hannan advanced the dialogue between faith and reason and helped others to discover the truth - the fullness of which we are prayerfully confident he now experiences with God."
