The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of America presents the following events this winter. Meetings with Menotti Professor Elaine Walter will present a lecture on Gian Carlo Menotti, the Italian-American composer who wrote operas to appeal to popular taste in the 1950s. The lecture will take place on Monday, Nov. 21, at 4 p.m. in Ward Hall's John Paul Hall. Composition Students Recital Students in the music school's composition program will present a concert on Monday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Ward Hall's Recital Hall. Christmas Concert for Charity The Annual Christmas Concert for Charity, co-sponsored by The Catholic University of America and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, will take place Friday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. The CUA Symphony Orchestra and University Chorus will perform along with the Choir of the Basilica. A freewill offering will be taken up to benefit A Simple House of Washington, D.C. Women's Chorus Christmas Concert The CUA Women's Chorus, directed by lecturer Kevin O'Brien, will present its annual Christmas concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, in St. Vincent's Chapel. Hartke Theatre Week The music school will present a week of music performances in CUA's Hartke Theatre.
Honor Band The second annual All Catholic High School Honor Band Festival will take place at CUA on Saturday, Dec. 10. The event will culminate with a concert conducted by John Mitchell, director of the Wind Ensemble, in the Hartke Theatre at 5 p.m. Town and Gown Christmas Concert The CUA Town and Gown Community Chorus presents its annual Christmas concert in St. Vincent's Chapel on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. The Music of Cy Coleman The musical theatre program will perform at The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts' Millennium Stage Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. This hour-long free performance celebrates "The Music of Cy Coleman." Coleman was the last major contributor to the Great American Songbook. He is responsible for songs such as "Witchcraft," "The Best Is Yet To Come," "Big Spender," and "The Rules Of The Road" that were made timeless by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, and others. He composed the scores for numerous Broadway musicals, including "Sweet Charity," "On The Twentieth Century," "The Life," "Barnum," "City of Angels," and "The Will Rogers Follies." Songs of Old CUA On Feb. 12, the music school presents "Songs of Old CUA" in conjunction with the University's 125th anniversary. The multimedia event will chronicle the history of Catholic University though songs written by faculty and students, and those that were commissioned for the University. Selections will include fight songs, marching songs, alma maters, drinking songs, and more. The event will take place at 3 p.m. in the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center, Great Room. Cabaret The music school will present the spring musical, Cabaret , Friday, Feb. 24, through Sunday, Feb. 26, in Ward Hall's Recital Hall. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 24 and 25 and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 26. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors, students, and CUA alumni, faculty, and staff. Madama Butterfly The music school presents the spring opera production of Madama Butterfly Friday, March 16, through Sunday, March 18, in Hartke Theatre. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on March 16 and 17 and at 2 p.m. on March 18. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors, students, and CUA alumni, faculty, and staff.
