DETAILS | The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music presents a performance by Trio Chiaroscuro. The trio comprises three of the country's leading musicians, flutist Jennifer Parker-Harley; bassoonist Michael Harley; and pianist Steven Aldredge (Wright State University). It presents performances that are dynamic, intelligent, and adventurous, says Stephen Gorbos, assistant professor of music at Catholic University. "The Italian word chiaroscuro can be translated as 'light-dark,' and is often used in visual arts for works that explore strong contrasts between these two seemingly opposing shades - each of which can only achieve maximum impact by being seen in conjunction with its opposite," Gorbos says. "The term describes the contrast of timbres, textures, and styles that informs both the trio's playing and the music - old and new - that they champion." The trio's program at The Catholic University of America will feature works spanning four centuries, including music by J.S. Bach, Charles Koechlin, Sergei Prokofiev, Conlon Nancarrow, and Martin Kennedy, plus newly-composed pieces by Gorbos and Grammy-Award winner Gordon Goodwin. This event is free and open to the public.
