Bishop Lori

Bishop William E. Lori

Pope Benedict XVI today named Bishop William E. Lori of the Diocese of Bridgeport as the head of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Archbishop-designate Lori is an alumnus of Catholic University and a former chairman of its Board of Trustees.

Archbishop-designate Lori served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Catholic University of America from 2003 to 2009. He was a member of the board for several years prior to being elected chairman. He was ordained in 1977 and earned a Doctor in Sacred Theology degree (S.T.D.) from Catholic University in 1982.

"The appointment of Archbishop-designate Lori is splendid news for the Archdiocese of Baltimore and for the Church in America," said Catholic University President John Garvey. "I am sure that he will be an outstanding archbishop for the faithful of Baltimore."

"Archbishop Lori has been a great friend of Catholic University, as an alumnus, board member, and board chairman," Garvey continued. "I had the privilege of working with him on religious liberty issues before I became the President of Catholic University. And most recently, I have collaborated with him on the bishops' Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of which he is chairman and I am a lay consultor. He is a visionary leader and a great defender of the faith."
