WHAT:

Discussion: "Health and Human Services: Conceptions Revisited"

WHEN:

Thursday, March 29, 7:30 p.m.

WHERE: The Catholic University of America Gowan Hall, Auditorium 620 Michigan Ave. N.E. Washington, D.C.
DETAILS Margaret McCarthy, assistant professor of theology at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family, and Kimberly Shankman, dean and professor of political science at Benedictine College, Atchison, Kan., will lead a discussion on the true meaning of religious freedom, personhood, and sexuality.

The recent mandate and subsequent "accommodation" issued by the Obama administration through the Department of Health and Human Services regarding the requirement of all insurance plans to provide coverage for contraception, abortifacients, and surgical sterilization to employees of religious organizations has led to a firestorm of media attention regarding the proper relationship between church and state. The result is a debate, with freedom of conscience on one side and women's health on the other. McCarthy and Shankman will discuss the Catholic Church's unique point of unity between the two sides, offering a vision of life that allows for the fulfillment of both religious expression and women's concerns by properly defining both "health" and "human." The event is open to the public and free of charge. For more information or to request disability accommodations, call 202-319-5488.
