"The FDA's Role in Protecting National Health and Security" Keynote Address at Department of Biology Research Symposium

DETAILS: Luciana Borio, M.D., assistant commissioner for counterterrorism policy and director, Office of Counterterrorism and Emerging Threats (OCET) in the Office of the Chief Scientist, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will be the featured speaker at the biology department's Annual Research Symposium.

Borio's talk will examine the measures taken by the FDA to prevent, identify, and respond to potential terrorist activities involving food or drugs.

"We are excited to have this speaker of national prominence to discuss research advances and applications that are of interest to both the campus community and the Department of Biology," said Frank Portugal, clinical associate professor and director of the M.S. in biotechnology program for the Department of Biology. "The deliberate release of a biological pathogen could affect many if not most of us. This is a health issue of the utmost importance to the general public."

The biology department's annual symposium emphasizes the research being conducted in the department. The symposium will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The keynote lecture from 1:30 to 2:30 is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will follow.
