Sustainable Events Scheduled for April

This month groups and departments across campus will celebrate sustainability in preparation for Earth Day on April 22. The CUA Green Club has been busy taking care of the University's community garden. Seeds were planted last month, and the group gathered again on April 6 to install fencing to protect the seedlings that are beginning to sprout. The School of Architecture and Planning hosted a three-day symposium, "Reclaim + Remake: Waste Is a Resource in the Wrong Place and Time," April 11 to 13, on recycling and reusing building materials. On April 19 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the Office of Facilities will host a Shred Day on campus for the destruction and recycling of paper materials. Members of the CUA community can bring up to four boxes of paperwork to the north end of McMahon Parking Lot (under the basketball hoop) to be safely and sustainably disposed. On Earth Day, several CUA organizations will come together to host an Earth Day event from noon to 3 p.m. in the Father O'Connell Hall Parking Lot - the building site for Harvest Home being built by Team DC for the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. Team DC (made up of students from CUA, American University, and George Washington University) will offer tours of the Solar Decathlon House. Pizza will be served. Brief talks will also be given by:

  • A representative from Casey Trees
  • Assistant Professor Patricia Andrasik, who runs CUA's LEED Lab in the School of Architecture and Planning
  • Assistant Professor of Architecture Bradley Guy, who will talk about the reuse of building materials
  • Members of CUA's Green Club
  • Associate Professor of Engineering Scott Mathews, who will talk about alternative energy courses offered at CUA

On Earth Day, Team Capital DC will also take part in a Twitter chat with all the Solar Decathlon teams using the hashtag #SDTwitterChat. All are invited to participate in this conversation.
