During its 12-day North American tour that ended this past weekend, the London-based Chelsea Football Club used The Catholic University of America Department of Athletics as its home base for training and competition.
Chelsea, which competes in the England Premier League, used the CUA Soccer Field and the Raymond A. DuFour Athletic Center for pre-season training and preparation for its participation in the inaugural Guinness Champions Cup. The inaugural competition consisted of tournament-style play in Indianapolis, New York City, and Miami.
Following its Aug. 7 loss to the Real Madrid, Chelsea defeated the Italian football club A.S. Roma 2-1 in a friendly match at Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium.
"We were thrilled to have the opportunity to host Chelsea for their training sessions here in Washington, D.C.," said Vice President of Student Affairs Michael Allen. "Everyone in their organization, along with the staff from Relevant Sports [TV network], was terrific to work with throughout the process. We wish them the best of luck and hope they will visit us again in the future."
