Aug. 20, 2013
The Catholic University of America Department of Drama will present "A Dream Play" as its Fall 2013 semester production.
Performance dates are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 14, 15, 16, and 21, 22, and 23 at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays, Nov. 17 and 24, at 2 p.m.
Written by August Strindberg and directed by Colin Hovde, who is artistic director of Theatre Alliance in Washington, D.C., the plot focuses on Agnes, a girl from "beyond" - possibly an angel or goddess - who comes to Earth and becomes trapped by the sufferings and cruelties of mankind.
The play is the premiere of a new adaptation by Matthew Buckley Smith, a CUA playwriting alumnus (M.F.A. 2013).
"Images and characters merge and separate, time moves backward and forward, and a locked door recurs obsessively," says Hovde. " 'A Dream Play' is a captivating mix of Freud, 'Alice in Wonderland,' and Strindberg's own personal symbolism."
Performances will take place at the Hartke Theatre on the Catholic University campus, located at 3801 Harewood Road, N.E., Washington, D.C.
