New students are set to arrive at The Catholic University of America for Orientation 2014 on Thursday, Aug. 21. The move-in date for returning students is Saturday, Aug. 23. President and Mrs. Garvey to Help Families with Move-in On Thursday, Aug. 21, University President John Garvey and his wife, Jeanne, will help freshman students move in to their residence halls. Graduate Nursing Enrollment Increases 75 Percent Enrollment in Catholic University's graduate programs in the School of Nursing increased 75 percent this year. In addition, more than 200 students from across the country enrolled in the school's three new online programs - Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and Ph.D. in Nursing. "CUA's School of Nursing has been proactive in foreseeing the demand for an increase in nurse practitioners with advanced degrees," says Pat McMullen, dean of the School of Nursing. "With the passage of the Affordable Health Care Act, CUA's nursing school has accurately anticipated future needs. Plus, in what other profession can you do so much good for people?" Mass of the Holy Spirit The Catholic University of America community will gather to celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit at 12:10 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Great Upper Church.Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl, archbishop of Washington and chancellor of the University, will serve as the main celebrant and homilist. University President John Garvey will address the congregation following Communion.The Mass - which draws heavy attendance by students, faculty, and staff and fills the Great Upper Church - marks the official start of the academic year at Catholic University and other Catholic educational institutions, a practice that goes back to the universities of medieval Europe. It will be televised live for the fifth consecutive year by the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN). Classes will be cancelled between 12:10 and 3:30 p.m. for students, faculty, and staff to attend the Mass.Cardinal Wuerl will present the University with The Cardinal's Award at the Mass. Presented by the archdiocese on its 75th anniversary, the honor acknowledges individuals and organizations that promote the Gospel, uphold the faith, and manifest the Kingdom of God in the local Church of Washington, according to the award citation. The Catholic University of America has contributed significantly to the life and mission of the Archdiocese of Washington, and the award recognizes its exceptional service, the citation notes.
