Pope Francis has named Most Rev. Blase Cupich, bishop of Spokane, to be the new archbishop of Chicago. He will succeed Cardinal Francis George, O.M.I.Archbishop-designate Cupich is an alumnus of The Catholic University of America. He specialized in sacramental theology, receiving a License of Sacred Theology in 1979 and a Doctor of Sacred Theology in 1987. He also studied at the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., and the Gregorian University in Rome."The Catholic University of America welcomes the news of Bishop Blase Cupich's appointment to succeed Cardinal Francis George," said University President John Garvey. "The faithful of Chicago will benefit greatly from his pastoral leadership, as they have these many years from the leadership of Cardinal George. It is gratifying to see another alumnus appointed to shepherd one of the major archdioceses in the United States. The Catholic University of America has benefited from Cardinal George's steadfast support and wise counsel for more than 15 years as a member of the University's Board of Trustees," said Garvey.Cardinal George studied philosophy at Catholic University, receiving an M.A. in 1965. Every U.S. cardinal who currently leads an archdiocese is an alumnus of The Catholic University of America.
