As March Madness begins, Catholic University's Department of Athletics has reason for celebration.

On Saturday, Feb. 28, the women's basketball team knocked off the University of Scranton, the number one team in the Landmark Conference, to win the Landmark Conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals beat the Royals by one point, 52-51, for the team's third conference championship in four years. The Cardinals will play the University of New England in Madison, N.J., on March 6 in the Division III NCAA Tournament. Another CUA squad got a big victory on Saturday when the women's lacrosse team beat Salisbury University, the nation's number one Division III team and defending back-to-back national champions. In their first game of the season, the Cardinals downed the Seagulls 13 to 12 in overtime. This was the first victory over a number one nationally ranked team for a CUA women's lacrosse team. Although the men's basketball team lost Saturday to the University of Scranton in the Landmark Conference title game, the team will play on. On Monday, March 2, the Cardinals learned they received an at-large bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament. They will host Alvernia University at the Raymond A. DuFour Athletic Center on March 5.
