| DETAILS: | The School of Theology and Religious Studies presents a discussion titled "The Synods on the Family and the New Evangelization" featuring Most Rev. Joseph E. Kurtz, archbishop of Louisville, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and a participant in the Synod of Bishops on the Family. John Grabowski, associate professor and director of moral theology/ethics at Catholic University and a member of the Pontifical Council for the Family, will also participate. The discussion aims to get beyond some of the sensationalized reporting on last October's Extraordinary Synod to what actually happened there and to the agenda for the coming Ordinary Synod to be held Oct. 4 through 25. The synods will be treated in the context of the pontificate of Pope Francis and the Church's commitment to the New Evangelization. Elected president of the USCCB in November 2013, Archbishop Kurtz serves on the executive and administrative committees of that body. He is vice chancellor of the board of the Catholic Extension Society. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Catholic University and on the Board of Directors of the National Catholic Bioethics Center. He also serves on the board of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia and on the advisory board to the cause for Archbishop Fulton Sheen's beatification. In February 2014, Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Kurtz to the Holy See's Congregation for the Oriental Churches. The event is free and open to the public.
