| DETAILS: | Renowned scholar Joseph Weiler will speak on "Sanctity and Morality in the Public Square" and will be presented with an honorary degree. Weiler is a professor, lawyer, and author who is committed to defending the primacy of Judeo-Christian morality and the rule of law upon which Western civilization rests. He was appointed president of the European University Institute in 2013. He is also the Joseph Straus Professor of Law at New York University, European Union Jean Monnet Chaired Professor, director of the Straus Institute for the Advanced Study of Law & Justice, codirector of the Tikvah Center for Law & Jewish Civilization, director of the Jean Monnet Center for International and Regional Economic Law and Justice, and director of the J.S.D. Program of the New York University School of Law. Weiler is a leading expert on European constitutional law. In 2010 he represented, pro bono, eight European governments in their appeal of a European Court of Human Rights decision that the display of the crucifix in Italian public schools violated the European Convention of Human Rights.
