President John Garvey announced today that the University has hired Scott P. Rembold as the new Vice President for University Advancement, effective June 24.
Mr. Rembold has 27 years of professional advancement experience, 13 of which have been at The Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Since April 2007 he has served as JHU's Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations. In that role he has overseen the development and alumni relations programs of 10 university divisions, generating between $100 million and $150 million in gifts and commitments annually. He was instrumental in JHU's successful conclusion of its Knowledge for the World Campaign, which raised $3.74 billion from 2000 to 2008. He has been part of the leadership team that conceptualized, launched, and is managing the current Rising to the Challenge campaign, which has raised $3 billion of its $4.5 billion goal since it began in 2010.
Rembold's previous positions at JHU have included Interim Associate Vice President for Principal Gifts, Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and Director of Development at SAIS. His recent duties have included working with donors at the $5 million-plus level, building and managing a team of international gift officers responsible for outreach efforts on three continents, providing guidance to volunteer advisory boards, and overseeing the gift planning division, which secures trust and estate commitments and manages life income agreements.
Before joining JHU in 2002, Rembold worked at The George Washington University (GWU) where he was Director of Development in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development (1999-2002) and Director of Development for Annual Giving Programs (1996-1999). His prior experience in higher education also includes working at Arizona State University as Director of Annual Giving.
Rembold earned a B.A. from Wake Forest University and an M.A. in Education and Human Development from GWU.
In announcing today's appointment President Garvey said, "In the fiscal year just ended we enjoyed our most successful fundraising year ever, thanks to a dedicated team of professionals in the Division of University Advancement. The only missing piece was a permanent Vice President for University Advancement. It gives me great pleasure to welcome Scott Rembold to that position. We are poised to make a qualitative leap forward in our fundraising success and Scott is the person who will show us the way. He has spent more than half of his professional career working in leadership roles for an institution that excels at capital campaigns and ranks among the top five universities in the country in fundraising. From my meetings and conversations with Scott, and from his impressive track record, I see a charismatic leader who not only thinks big but also has the skills and drive to capitalize on the enormous potential of our University so that we can realize the visionary changes spelled out in our strategic and master plans."
Rembold welcomed the news of his appointment. "I am excited to lead The Catholic University of America's advancement program at such an important time in the University's history. I look forward to partnering with the Board of Trustees, President Garvey, the deans, members of the faculty, and especially the alumni to secure the University's bright future. I have been impressed to learn of the great strides that the advancement and alumni team has made over the past two years, generating significant fundraising increases and engaging more alumni than ever before. Together, we can build on these successes to take this program to even greater heights."
As the new Vice President for University Advancement, Rembold will provide overall leadership and direction for annual giving, major and planned giving, corporate and foundation giving, alumni and parent relations, donor relations and stewardship, gift processing and acknowledgement, and special events.
