Pope Francis has appointed John Grabowski, associate professor of moral theology/ethics at The Catholic University of America, as an expert ( adiutor ) to the 2015 Synod of Bishops scheduled for Oct. 4 through 25. The theme of the Synod's General Assembly is "The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and in the Contemporary World."
Grabowski is an alumnus of the University of Steubenville and received his Ph.D. at Marquette University. At Catholic University, where he has taught for the past 24 years, he serves as the director of the moral theology/ethics area. In addition, he has served as associate dean for graduate studies at the School of Theology and Religious Studies. His areas of expertise include fundamental moral theology, marriage, sexual ethics, theological anthropology, virtue theory, and gender issues.
William Mattison, interim dean of theology and religious studies, says, "CUA and the School of Theology and Religious Studies could not be more proud of our faculty member John Grabowski, associate professor of moral theology. John, with his wife Claire, have long served as members of the Pontifical Council on Marriage and Family. This, and his extensive research on marriage and family, makes him a wonderful contributor to the synod. It is yet another example of our faculty here at TRS making the highest-level contributions to not only the academy but also to our Catholic Church."
Grabowski's appointment as an expert will involve collaborating with the Synod's special secretary in preparing synodal documents and assisting the general relator in the drafting of reports. The XIVth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops will take place in Rome.
