Sept. 11, 2015
In honor of the upcoming papal visit to The Catholic University of America, CUA's Department of Art presents artist Pat Costigan's project, "Grace: The Words of Pope Francis" at CUA's Salve Regina Art Gallery through Sept. 27. Costigan is a New York artist and the mother of a CUA alumnus.
The exhibit features pieces inspired by Pope Francis's teachings on grace. Each is accompanied by a quote or excerpt specifically chosen by Costigan from speeches and homilies Pope Francis has given over the past two years.
Nora Heimann, associate professor of art history and chair of the art department, says, "We are excited in every way. There is a lot about Pope Francis that is very charismatic and inspiring so the theme of this exhibit has a very authentic impulse behind it." Heimann describes the exhibit as "complex and deep, ranging from figurative pieces to abstract pieces. The vibrant colors are beautifully chosen and extreme, yet Costigan is deliberate in each piece, down to the stroke. It is a reflection of how a single individual can inspire someone for a lifetime and single works of art can reflect a devotion that is profound and enduring."
After an opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the art department hosts a meet-the-artist event on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m., and a papal celebration on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Salve Regina Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call the Department of Art at 202-319-5282.
