Today the Supreme Court of the United States heard the oral arguments of the co-plaintiffs in Roman Catholic Archbishop of Washington, et al. v Sylvia Matthews Burwell, et al., against the implementation of the mandate by the Department of Health and Human Services that would require The Catholic University and other religious organizations to provide health insurance coverage for surgical sterilization, prescription contraceptives, and drugs that cause early stage abortions. A decision by the Court is expected before the end of this term.
President John Garvey issued the following statement:
"We are grateful to have been given a fair hearing in front of the Supreme Court today and for the opportunity to present the many ways in which this mandate burdens our right to operate The Catholic University of America and other religious institutions in accord with our deeply held religious beliefs. We await the Court's decision and look forward to a just resolution to the case."
