(WASHINGTON, D.C.) While many Americans are focused on the final stages of the presidential election, five individuals will discuss what comes after the results are counted. In response to a national conversation that is marked - regardless of affiliation - by divisive rhetoric and broken exchange, The National Review Institute and Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies (IPR) at The Catholic University of America will host a conversation calling for renewal as it applies to the national political conversation. According to Kathryn Jean Lopez (CUA '97), editor-at-large of National Review and Senior Fellow of the National Review Institute, "In the face of no clear good choice for President, this election can serve as an opportunity for renewal for Christians. Catholics are implored to insert basic principles of human dignity and freedom from the Gospel and social teaching into the arena of politics and public policy." The conversation, Citizenship and Civility: The Role of Catholics in Rebuilding the American Political Culture , will be moderated by Lopez. It will take place Tuesday, November 1 , at 6 p.m. in the McInerney Auditorium of Father O'Connell Hall at Catholic University. Panelists will include:
  • Melinda Henneberger, board of contributors at USA Today and IPR fellow.
  • Chad Pecknold , associate professor of theology at Catholic University. Pecknold is frequently sought after by the media for his expertise on the intersection of religion and politics.
  • Jonathan Reyes, executive director, Department of Justice, Peace, and Human Development at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
  • Stephen Schneck, director of IPR, and associate professor of politics at Catholic University. In 2015, Schneck was appointed to President Barack Obama's third Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
