Oct. 28-29, 2016 City of Angels Book by Larry Gelbart. Music by Cy Coleman. Lyrics by David Zippel.When Hollywood offers a New York novelist the opportunity to adapt his books into a film, he packs up and moves to the home of perennial sunshine, palm trees, and stars. City of Angels moves between the beautiful Technicolor world of Hollywood and Stine's glamorous film noir-in-progress of the same title. While Stine's movie plays out in black and white, he finds the dangerous temptations of the world of Los Angeles - the distraction of women, the lure of fame, and the artistic compromises being made right and left - all too colorful.Performances will take place Oct. 28 and 29, at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 30, at 2 p.m., at CUA's Hartke Theater, 3801 Harewood Road. Tickets are $40 for premium seating; $25 for general admission; $15 for seniors, military, and CUA alumni/faculty/staff; and $5 for students and those under 18.
Nov. 17-20, 2016 The Outcasts of Poker Flat A New American OperaMusic and Libretto by professor Andrew Earle Simpson. Based on the short story by Bret Harte.In the wilds of California's snowy mountains, six characters from different worlds are thrown together and face a common danger. How they respond reveals their true natures. Having experienced rejection and betrayal, the members of this isolated band of travelers form friendships that provide love and acceptance. One of the classic tales that first brought national acclaim for author Bret Harte, this story has inspired at least five films and one play. Andrew Earle Simpson's contemporary classical score draws on American folk and country music as well as church and parlor songs.Performances will take place in Ward Recital Hall on Nov. 17, 18, and 19, at 7:30 p.m., and Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission; $10 for seniors and CUA alumni/faculty/staff; and $5 for students and those under 18.
Feb. 17-26, 2017 Little Women: The Broadway Musical Book by Allan Knee. Music by Jason Howland. Lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. Based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott.Based on Louisa May Alcott's classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, the musical focuses on the four March sisters - brassy Jo, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted Beth - and their beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Mass., while the family patriarch is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. Intercut with the vignettes in which their lives unfold are several recreations of the melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio. At its core it is a musical about family and the love that binds them together against all odds.Performances will take place in Ward Recital Hall on Feb. 17, 18, 24, and 25, at 7:30 p.m.; and Feb. 19 and 26, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission; $10 for seniors and CUA alumni/faculty/staff; and $5 for students and those under 18.
March 23-26, 2017 Lucia di Lammermoor Based on Sir Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor .In Scotland's Lammermuir Hills, a young couple, not unlike Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, fight fate and family to be together. After Lucia is tricked into marrying a man she doesn't love, her wedding celebration quickly turns to tragedy. As with Shakespeare's star-crossed pair, the surviving lover is left to join the other in the only possible way. Scott's epic historical novel depicts a time when women were but pawns in dynastic chess games. Donizetti's passionate, bel canto tour-de-force contains two of the operatic literature's most memorable soprano arias.Performance will take place in Hartke Theatre March 23, 24, and 25, at 7:30 p.m.; and March 26, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $40 for premium seating; $25 for general; $15 for seniors and CUA alumni/faculty/staff; and $5 for students and children under 8. April 9, 2017 Opera and Musical Theatre Soiree: Anything You Can Do, We Can Do Too! Join the Vocal and Musical Theatre Divisions as they switch roles and celebrate the great traditions in each other's repertoire. Imagine the golden age of Broadway sung by our outstanding young opera singers and your favorite classical songs and arias given new and vibrant readings by some of the most talented young musical theatre performers in the D.C. area. Performances will include champagne and dessert and will take place in Father O'Connell Hall on Sunday, April 10, at 3 p.m.
