At the Catholic University of America’s annual Convocation on September 11, V. Bradley Lewis, the newly appointed Dean of the School of Philosophy, inspired new students to embark on a transformative academic journey. Speaking in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Dean Lewis emphasized the significance of intellectual growth and critical thinking.
“Every fall, I still marvel at the beginning of the academic year and the renewed promise of discovery,” Dean Lewis shared. He urged students to move beyond social media echo chambers that foster division and negativity, advocating instead for engagement with diverse ideas through reading and dialogue. “Reading books and talking to people is better for your soul,” he advised, highlighting the importance of thoughtful and reflective approaches to education.
Provost Aaron Dominguez supported this vision, adding, “This is a place where we can unite faith and reason, science and the Church, innovative research and timeless wisdom – all in one place.” He underscored the University’s unique environment that fosters integration of these elements, promoting intellectual and personal development.
The Convocation marked the beginning of a new chapter for the first-year students, setting the stage for their journey of growth at Catholic University.
