WHEN: March 23, 24, and 25, at 7:30 p.m., and March 26, at 2 p.m. WHERE: The Catholic University of America, Hartke Theater, 620 Michigan Ave., N.E., Washington, D.C. DETAILS: The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music presents its spring 2017 opera, Lucia di Lammermoor. The story, set in Scotland's Lammermuir Hills, follows a young couple who fight fate and family to be together. After Lucia is tricked into marrying a man she doesn't love, her wedding celebration quickly turns into tragedy. As with Shakespeare's star-crossed pair, Romeo and Juliet, the surviving lover is left to join the other in the only possible way. The opera is loosely based on Sir Walter Scott's epic historical novel, The Bride of Lammermoor, which depicts a time when women were but pawns in dynastic chess games. The opera is sung in Italian with English supertitles with music by Gaetano Donizetti and libretto by Salvadore Cammarano. Donizetti's passionate, bel canto tour-de-force contains two of operatic literature's most memorable soprano arias. Hartke Theater is a short walking distance from the Brookland-CUA stop on the Metro Red Line.Tickets for Lucia di Lammermoor are $40 for premium, $25 for adults, $15 for military, seniors, and Catholic University faculty and staff, and $5 for students and those under 18.
